Rosie the Nurse Socks to Benefit Health Care Workers & Patients

Rosie the Riveter dresses as a nurse in medical scrubs and a face mask on navy and red novelty socks

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Oct. 21, 2020) — How do you thank a health care worker when words just can't express your gratitude? ModSocks sells a sock for that, and is giving all profits to charity.

The Bellingham, Wash. sock brand designed Rosie the Nurse socks with a reimagined Rosie the Riveter who wears scrubs and a face mask instead of denim coveralls. The style is available featuring Rosies with two different skin tones, and also in a knee-high version where both Rosies work together. They are offered in two sizes to fit most adults, and sold through retail partners nationwide including online at ModSock.

ModSocks said the idea for the socks came out of a desire to recognize the tireless efforts of health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic while helping to create lasting health care equity.

“This pandemic has exposed the huge gaps in our health care system when it comes to treating people in marginalized communities,” said Urania Shaklee, ModSocks owner and designer of Rosie the Nurse socks. “Our socks are a way to thank health care workers while recognizing that the intense challenges they face could be reduced if there was more equitable access to health care.”

The brand has pledged to donate all profits from the new Rosie the Nurse socks to Planned Parenthood because of the organization's commitment to improving care for underserved populations.

“MBPP believes that Every Body Deserves Care, no matter who they love, or how much they earn,” said Executive Director Linda McCarthy of local affiliate Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood. “Everyone is welcome to use our service at any time. Our medical staff care for each person as we would for our own family members. No matter what race, creed, religion, income or sexual orientation, ALL are welcome at Planned Parenthood.”

Access to care for people from impoverished and rural communities isn't just less — sometimes it is nonexistent. Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of reproductive health care in America, with more than 600 active health centers operating in the United States. They provide low to no-cost cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, contraception, abortion services and sexual health education to more than 5 million people each year.

More than 75% of Planned Parenthood clients have incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, making them one of the biggest health care providers for low-income people.

Planned Parenthood is also the beneficiary of ModSocks' 2017 line of Nasty Rosie the Riveter socks reimagining Rosie as a “nasty woman.” ModSocks has donated nearly $40,000 to the Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood affiliate through the sale of Nasty Rosie socks so far.

ModSocks is a designer and wholesaler of novelty socks with designs ranging from sloths, constellations, cat mermaids, guitars, florals, Sasquatch, books, coffee and more. The line is sold directly on Amazon and in hundreds of retail stores.

A Cause to Celebrate

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (May 9, 2019) — Today ModSocks sponsored Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood's 50th anniversary kickoff celebration. In attendance were Planned Parenthood president Dr. Leana Wen, the board of directors including Executive Director Linda McCarthy, founding members of the clinic from when it began in 1969, local philanthropists and ModSocks staff.

ModSocks' connection with Planned Parenthood began with the brand's Nasty Rosie the Riveter collection of socks. These socks were designed to raise money with their sales for the health care provider. They show Rosie the Riveter as a nasty woman, fighting back against patriarchy and oppression with a raised middle finger and the word “NASTY” tattooed on her arm. They proved to be popular with customers across the country, and ModSocks was pleased to present its first gift to Planned Parenthood for $25,000 in November 2018. To sponsor the anniversary celebration, ModSocks donated another $14,000, in effect paying for this important fundraising event with fun socks.

At the celebration, employees from ModSocks were treated to drinks, appetizers and a cake so large our table couldn't even finish it. The staff took photographs with Dr. Wen and spoke with doctors and donors about our fun socks and the money they were helping raise for this important cause. Some celebrants even bought their own ModSocks at the event, where Nasty Rosie was sold alongside Planned Parenthood T-shirts, tote bags and other merchandise.

The mood was lively and passionate, with moving speeches from McCarthy and Wen. For 50 years, Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood has provided family planning, pregnancy prevention and sexual health services to Whatcom, Skagit, and San Juan counties.

ModSocks makes its donations with the specification that the money be used wherever the need is greatest. Often, that means care for individuals. It is the company's hope that their socks will continue to touch peoples' lives and empower them, whether through their access to health care or simply their ability to express themselves!

ModSocks is a designer and wholesaler of novelty socks with designs ranging from sloths, constellations, cat mermaids, guitars, florals, Sasquatch, books, coffee and more. The line is sold directly on Amazon and in hundreds of stores across 36 states, which can be found online at www.modsocks.com.

Nasty Rosie Socks Raise Over $25,000 for Planned Parenthood

ModSocks presents Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood with $25,000 from Nasty Rosie Socks fundraiser
ModSocks staff presents Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood Executive Director Linda McCarthy, right, with $25,000, the to-date profits from the Bellingham, Washington sock company’s Nasty Rosie style — a design depicting cultural icon Rosie the Riveter with her middle finger raised.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (March 6, 2019) — Today ModSocks socked it to inequality by presenting Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood with $25,000, the to-date profits from the Bellingham sock company's Nasty Rosie style — a design depicting cultural icon Rosie the Riveter with her middle finger raised.

Nasty Rosie is a reflection of ModSocks' commitment to equal rights. Owner and designer Urania Shaklee says she conceptualized a design that both points a finger at those perpetuating injustice and aims to counteract it. After polling staff and considering how to most directly empower women, the business pledged 100 percent of Nasty Rosie profits to Planned Parenthood, an effort that is ongoing.

“I was reeling from the election of Donald Trump when I created Nasty Rosie,” Shaklee said. “The choice to empower women through healthcare access was easy and obvious. It is even more important now during attempts to defund Title X, which extends crucial services beyond women. Giving directly to our local PP affiliate helps counter these attacks and offer care to those who need it, no matter what.”

All of ModSocks' Nasty Rosie and Black Nasty Rosie socks feature a modern-day portrayal of Rosie the Riveter flipping her middle finger with the word “NASTY” tattooed on her bicep. Offered in a variety of styles, colors and sizes, the collection is available through retail partners nationwide including Shaklee's own store ModSock in Bellingham, Washington.

The Nasty Rosie sock captures the feelings many have felt over the past few years of attacks on women’s rights and health care. The iconic ‘Rosie’ symbol gives hope that together we can fight against the forces that want to drive women’s health care back to the Dark Ages.MBPP Executive Director Linda McCarthy

Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood's mission is to provide, promote, and protect access to reproductive health care and sexuality education, empowering each person to make informed personal choices.

"MBPP was thrilled to be the recipient of this generous gift from ModSocks,” said Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood Executive Director Linda McCarthy. “The Nasty Rosie sock captures the feelings many have felt over the past few years of attacks on women’s rights and health care. The iconic 'Rosie' symbol gives hope that together we can fight against the forces that want to drive women’s health care back to the Dark Ages. Nasty Rosie is perfectly aligned with the renewed women’s rights movement in America … We CAN do it!”

We Can Do It!

Nasty Rosie the Riveter Socks in yellow and navy

At ModSocks, we are used to people getting our name wrong. The most common mistake is MADSocks. When it happens, we laugh because it's true.

Our employees hold many views and come from different backgrounds, but one thing that makes all of us furious is the dismantling of women's rights. That is why we have pledged to give Planned Parenthood 100% of our profits from our new Nasty Rosie socks, available online at ModSock and at many of our retail partners.

ModSocks’ knee-high Nasty Rosie the Riveter Socks depict intersectional feminism at work.

These socks aren't sweet or sugar-coated. This is Rosie the Riveter as you've never seen her before, flexing her tattooed biceps and flipping off those people telling her to get out of the assembly line and back in the kitchen. These socks are our reaction to the injustice we see in our society right now, and they are quite literally a “f*ck you” to those perpetuating that injustice.

Need a pair of feminist socks that are safe for work? Consider taking a stand in our worksafe Rosie the Riveter socks, ModSocks' modern update to the original can-do historic icon.

We made the Nasty Rosie collection because we felt that it was time to show the world exactly what we believe in. We believe in gender equality. We believe that Black lives matter. We believe that when we work together, a bunch of nasty, amazing, hardworking people can change history.

We can do it.
